Seems like I blink and it is a new year again. The past year is one I am happy to put behind me. There were so many changes that left me feeling unsettled. I am not unhappy with my life. I am just experiencing some overwhelming and unsatisfied feelings. I know the only way to get past this is to truly adopt a functional wellness mindset and move forward. I refuse to settle for feeling this way. This is not my new normal. I tell my patients every single day to never settle for feeling mediocre. Do not blame your age, your job, your genetics, or your luck for feeling unhealthy. Your mindset is your biggest obstacle.
You know that amazing feeling on the second morning of a vacation? You wake up feeling refreshed, relaxed, and excited. You count how many days you have left and get that giddy feeling. You have time to enjoy yourself without deadlines or schedules. Then you hit that final day. Panic sets in. You want to enjoy it, but a dark cloud of reality looms over you. You remember the work, budgets, and time constraints waiting for you at home.
Building Your Functional Wellness Mindset
What if your life felt like that second day of vacation on a regular basis? Why isn't it? You have to make your life a reality you do not need an escape from. We all have setbacks and struggles. We all have hurts and bad habits. Those things should never stop us from loving the life we live. Life is simply too short to settle and struggle.
I have worked in patient care for years. As a CNA in a nursing home, I witnessed incredible grief and pain. That experience forever impacted me. As a hospital nurse, I saw desperation and fear, but also grace and healing. As a hospice nurse, I felt deep compassion and heartache. Now, as a Nurse Practitioner, my experience makes me feel every emotion. I feel sympathy, empathy, and sometimes even frustration. The greatest tool I have as an NP is empowerment. That is my true achievement.
Every day, I meet people who have been brushed aside by conventional medicine. They feel disregarded and disheartened by the healthcare system. I struggle with it daily for myself and my patients. Dealing with insurance barriers and the nonsense of authorizations makes me nauseous. The only thing we can do is change our perspective. We have to move through the issue at hand and create our own solutions. I am saying this just as much for myself as I am for you.
We have to treat each day looking for opportunity and happiness. We cannot just push our struggles aside. We must remove them from our vision because they are nothing but a hindrance. This applies to everything in our lives. We need to remove junk food from our homes. We need to stop mindless scrolling on toxic social media. We must stop leaning on fear for our future.
This year is all about empowering, believing, and trusting the process. It is in your hands to make the best of it. Let us start making yourself a priority today.
